Chapter Thirty
Alexei
I wait in the shadows for the precise moment to strike. Iâve hesitated too long on this job, and I canât drag my feet any more. I kill people. Thatâs who I fucking am.
Even if recently it feels like thatâs the last thing I want to do.
Thereâs too much Natalie in my head pushing out everything else lately. When Iâm not worrying about her still living at that house with that fuck of a husband, Iâm obsessed with seeing her again.
I swear I canât get a momentâs peace since this woman came into my life. That needs to end right now.
She refused to go with me. She left me no choice. I had to leave her there and accept that she wonât leave him.
So sheâll leave this way.
I watch through the living room window waiting for her to come down now that heâs home. He walked upstairs, probably to their bedroom.
Fuck, even the thought of him in bed with her makes everything in me hurt like someoneâs cutting tiny slices in my skin and pouring salt in the wounds. He wants her dead. She knows that, and yet she stays there.
He sure does have her trained, doesnât he? She does exactly what he wants, and still he hires me to kill her. Fucking ingrate.
My phone vibrates in my pocket, so I take my eyes off the house for a moment and see Samsonâs name on the screen. âWhatâs going on?â
âI was calling to ask you the same thing. You didnât tell me it was going down tonight, so Iâm here watching the house like I do every day. Youâre pretty obvious, Alexei. I mean, I guess Iâm looking for things, but in this neighborhood, someone staking out a place like you are isnât exactly subtle.â
Great. Now Iâm losing my touch at my job in addition to the rest of my life. Damnit, this woman is going to be the end of me.
âSo now youâre an expert who knows more than I do?â I snap.
âNo. I just thought Iâd check in,â he says more than a little reluctantly.
I stand from my spot just outside her backyard and start heading down the pathway separating the houses on Garrison Lane. Grudgingly, I have to admit Samsonâs right. Iâm not thinking clearly. Hell, Iâm not even sure I intended on doing the goddamned job tonight.
Or any night, for that matter.
By the time I reach Samsonâs car, I donât feel like beating myself up anymore. Settling into the passenger seat, I lean back and pinch the bridge of my nose to forgo the headache growing behind my eyes.
âSo nothing tonight?â he asks, and I can tell heâs smiling even before I turn to look at him.
âMaybe I should shoot a smartass underling who canât remember his fucking place,â I grumble.
âUnderling? Man, that hurts,â he says with a laugh. âThe rest of it is certainly true, but damn, Alexei. Underling cuts me.â
I know heâs busting my balls, but I nod my understanding that I stepped over the line anyway.
